CONTEMPORARY CONNECTIONS


Have your students examine images of the West and of the frontier in commercials and print ads. Ask them to examine the portrayal of the landscape, and to note the ways in which the ads promise freedom. From where do these images come? What is appealing about these ads? Why are we so drawn to these images? Some ads that might be most helpful:

  • cigarette ads in magazines

  • TV ads for SUVs

  • ads for Internet-related services
